Hypertension: Advant is primarily used to treat high blood pressure caused by hypertension.
Heart Failure: It can also be used in adults with heart failure (NYHA class II-IV) and left ventricular systolic dysfunction (< 40%) to reduce cardiovascular death and heart failure hospitalizations12.
Dosage:
The usual recommended starting dose is 16mg once daily when used as monotherapy in patients who are not volume-depleted.
Advant can be administered once or twice daily, with total daily doses ranging from 8mg to 32mg. Higher doses do not appear to have a greater effect, and there is relatively little experience with such doses3.
How It Works:
Candesartan, the active form of Advant, is an angiotensin II receptor (type AT1) antagonist.
It blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II by selectively binding to the AT1 receptor in various tissues, including vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland.
