Overview:
Oxytocin is a hormone that is administered to induce or strengthen uterine contractions during labor. It is also used to control bleeding after childbirth or to stimulate uterine contractions in cases of incomplete or threatened miscarriage.
Uses:
Induces labor or strengthens uterine contractions during childbirth
Controls postpartum bleeding
Stimulates uterine contractions in cases of incomplete or threatened miscarriage
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, vomiting, headache
Less common: Rapid heart rate, excessive uterine contractions
Rare: Severe allergic reactions, water intoxication (due to oxytocin’s antidiuretic effect)
Precautions:
Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or uterine problems
Use with caution in patients with a history of previous cesarean section or uterine surgery
Follow the recommended dosage and administration guidelines closely, as too much oxytocin can overstimulate the uterus and cause complications.
