Indications:
Abhimic is indicated for the treatment of hypertension.
It may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
Pharmacology:
Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor that affects blood pressure regulation.
Olmesartan selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in vascular smooth muscle, leading to vasodilation and reduced blood pressure.
Olmesartan has a greater affinity for the AT1 receptor than the AT2 receptor.
It does not inhibit ACE (kininase II) and does not affect the response to bradykinin.
Dosage & Administration:
The usual starting dose of Olmesartan is 20 mg once daily (monotherapy).
For patients needing further blood pressure reduction, the dose may be increased to 40 mg.
No advantage exists for twice-daily dosing over once-daily dosing.
No initial dosage adjustment is needed for elderly patients or those with renal or hepatic impairment.
